2025 - Fisheries Management Order Requiring Gaspereau Fishers in Eastern New Brunswick to Retain Striped Bass Caught Incidentally

Tracadie, New Brunswick – June 20, 2025 - Pursuant to Subsection 9.5 of the Fisheries Act, the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) gives notice that a Fisheries Management Order (FMO) has been issued pursuant to Subsection 9.1 of the Fisheries Act due to an existing threat to the proper management and control of fisheries and the requirement of prompt measures to address that threat.

FMO # 2025-01, available at: Fishery openings and Notice of fishing prohibitions, comes into effect on June 20, 2025 and the following requirements with respect to fishing are being imposed:

  1. Subject to section 2 below, any person fishing for gaspereau in Eastern New Brunswick within the defined areas and seasons identified in the table below, who catches striped bass incidentally is required to retain the incidentally caught striped bass that measure between 50 and 65 centimeters.
  2. The maximum quantity of incidentally caught striped bass in a day that must be retained is 500. Striped bass incidentally caught in a day in excess of 500 must be released in the waters in which they were caught and where they are alive, in a manner that causes them the least harm.
  3. Holders of a licence to fish for gaspereau must report to DFO, within 24 hours of cessation of any daily fishing activity, the quantity of striped bass caught and retained during that daily activity, by number and in pounds, via e-mail to: DFO.GLFENB.MPO@dfo-mpo.gc.ca.

This Order prevails over any regulations made under the Fisheries Act, any orders issued under those regulations, and over any conditions of any lease or licence issued under that Act.

This Fisheries Management Order takes effect on the day on which it is signed and will remain in effect for a period of 45 days or when the season ends.
