2023 - Implementation of Temporary Measures in Lobster Fishing Area (LFA) 23, Sub-Area 23C

Tracadie, New Brunswick (NB) – April 4, 2023 – Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), Gulf Region, announces temporary measures in LFA 23, sub-area 23C.

A line with a 200 meters buffer zone is established in sub-area 23C for the 2023 lobster fishing season. This temporary measure is intended to reduce conflicts between fishers in the communities of Le Goulet and Chiasson Office. The attached map (Figure 1) illustrates the location of the buffer zone.

The Department will undertake discussions with industry members after the fishing season to discuss long-term solutions including new management measures.

Daily closed time: There will be a change to the daily closed time for 2023 for the communities of Le Goulet and Chiasson Office. The fishery will be closed daily from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. This change is a request from industry. The daily closed time for the other areas of LFA 23C will remain the same, from 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m.

The opening date for the fishing season in LFA 23 will be announced at a later date.
