Herring Fishing Areas 16C and E 2006 and 2007 Fall Herring Fisheries Management Measures

August 14, 2006

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), Gulf Region wishes to notify fishers in Herring Fishing Areas 16C and E of management measures for the 2006 and 2007 fall herring fisheries. This is in addition to the announcement made on July 20, 2006, for the Herring Fishing Areas 16C&E, 2006-2007 Fall Fishery Management Measures.

The opening dates of the fishery for the portion of the quota that will be fished competitively by both groups (Group A - fishers with a homeport in New Brunswick and Group B - fishers with a homeport in Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island) are September 3rd for 2006 and September 9th for 2007. As requested in the July 20, 2006 announcement, fisher representatives from both groups have submitted a harvesting plan to DFO to fish their respective 2,500 tonnes allocation. For 2006, Group A will begin fishing their 2,500 tonnes allocation 48 hours after the competitive portion of the fishery closes and Group B will begin on August 20, 2006.
