Amendments to the Fishery (General) Regulations (FGR) were published in the Canada Gazette, Part II on July 1, 2026.
These new amendments add 57 major fish stocks to the Fish Stocks provisions (Sections 6.1–6.3) under the Fisheries Act, bringing the total number of stocks subject to the Fish Stocks provisions to 86. The 57 stocks are now subject to the Fish Stocks provisions. The Fish Stocks provisions include obligations to maintain major fish stocks at levels necessary to promote sustainability or above their limit reference point (Section 6.1); and to develop and implement rebuilding plans within 24-36 months for major stocks that have declined to or below their limit reference point (Section 6.2). In addition, Section 6.3 states that Sections 6.1 and 6.2 apply only to major fish stocks prescribed by regulation.
