Tracadie, New Brunswick (NB) – July 13, 2023 – Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) wishes to inform scallop license holders in sub-area 21A of Scallop Fishing Area (SFA) 21 that the commercial scallop fishery in this sub-area will be suspended for the 2023 season. This temporary measure is being enacted following industry recommendations.
Industry stakeholders have proposed to conduct scientific projects in this sub-area in 2023 to evaluate the effectiveness of an alternative method to dredging. Discussions will take place in the fall regarding the long-term viability of the scallop fishery in this sub-area.
