Notice to Recreational Anglers
Fisheries and Oceans Canada,
Temporary closure of angling for all species on the Nepisiguit River
Moncton, New Brunswick – July 30, 2019 - Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) wishes to inform the public that angling for all species will be closed in the Nepisiguit River from the dam at Nepisiguit Falls downstream to the mouth, starting at 11:00 a.m. and until 6 :00 a.m. the next morning, every day until further notice, due to high water temperature. This closure will start Tuesday, July 30, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. and will remain in place until conditions improve, as per the strategy implemented for 2019 in cooperation with local partners to respond to warm waters conditions.
Atlantic salmon is a cold water species. During times of warm waters, Atlantic salmon experience temperature-related stress or exhaustion, which can cause death. Research has shown that when the minimum water temperature stays above 20°C, Atlantic salmon struggle to recover from stressful events and can experience elevated rates of mortality. As such, an agreement has been developed by DFO in cooperation with partners, to address the harmful effects of catch and release angling in times of warm waters. The agreement uses established temperature thresholds to guide angling restrictions. When the water temperature in the Nepisiguit River reaches established thresholds, a consultation process between DFO and partners is triggered in order to either restrict angling or lift restrictions depending on the case.
Another notice will be issued on Fisheries and Oceans Canada regional Internet site to indicate when angling reopens to normal hours, once conditions have improved.
