PEI ATLANTIC HALIBUT CONSERVATION HARVESTING PLAN, 2010-2011

MONCTON - August 3, 2010 - The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO), today approved the Conservation Harvesting Plan, (CHP), for the PEI fixed gear fleet sector for the 2010 season.

The Atlantic halibut allocation for this fleet is set at 23.2 metric tonnes. Under the terms of the approved CHP, the season will commence at 06:00 hrs (ADT) on August 31st, 2010 and end at 21:00 hrs (ADT) on the same day.

The approved gear for this fishery is longline (maximum of 1,000 hooks) with a minimum hook gape size of 15.4mm. Harvesters are reminded that in an effort to determine the actual effort expected for this fishery they must pre-register with their association by 12:00 (noon) on August 6th. An industry funded at-sea-observer coverage program is required at a minimal level of 10%.
